About Nursery Information

What’s included

The Nursery Information section contains information on 2381 North American seed and nursery firms. The Internet has greatly affected the nursery industry with many firms now relying solely on web catalogs. Reflecting this change, Plant Information Online now places much more emphasis on a nursery’s web presence. Using this section one can access these firms by firm name, city, state or province, whether a firm is retail or wholesale, and broad specialties. Other information given includes address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail, web site and web catalog addresses. Direct linking to web addresses insures ease of use. Those seeking access to specific plants should search the Plant and Seed Sources section of this site.

Wholesale firms

It is important that users respect the nature of wholesale firms. Those not qualified to purchase wholesale can ask a local nursery, landscape contractor or gardener to order wholesale plants for them. Those seeking access to specific plants should search the Plant and Seed Sources section of this site.

Search tips

The default setting for searches is RETAIL firms. Those wishing to search for Wholesale firms or who wish to search Retail and Wholesale firms together will need to change the default button for each search.

Searching for a firm’s name is easily done by typing in the complete or partial name of the desired firm (remembering to set the retail/wholesale designation properly). If you use a partial name be sure to end your search term with the wildcard (*) to find every name that starts with the characters you’ve entered. Also consider truncating your search with the wildcard if there might be punctuation within the name. For example, a search for “Logee’s” or “Logee*” will bring up the firm’s name. A search for “Logees” will not.

To search for Canadian firms, set the “Country” search box to “Canada” (the default is USA). To search for a US state, click the “State” search box and select the two-letter state code. Leave this box empty if you’re searching for Canadian nurseries or if you don’t need to limit your search by state. The default—which is no state—can be returned to by clicking on the blank listing at the start of the state abbreviations.

To search by firm specialty, click and set the desired selection. Again, the blank default appears at the head of the specialty listings. Clicking on links to websites and online catalogs does not bump you out of the system. Depending on your browser and settings, the new website might open in another tab or window or in the same window. You may need to use your browser’s “Back” function or click on the relevant tab or window to return to Plant Information Online.

The best search strategies really depend on your needs. Broad searches return the most information, while more specific searches will return less information but of a more exact nature. Using very specific searches leads to results hard to obtain in other listings.

History

Contact information about North American nurseries was originally part of the information available in the printed Andersen Horticultural Library’s source list of plants and seeds. More information on the history of that publication is available here.
